QR Codes

September 6, 2010

I’m still very excited about the marketing potential of QR codes.  The technology, I don’t think, is quite right yet in the UK but they have already had mainstream adoption in Japan.

QR or Quick Response, codes are much like a bar code and can be scanned by the camera on your smart phone and the squares turned into meaningful text by viewing the code in a QR Code Reader application (you’ll need to find one right for your phone).

Why is this so exciting?  Well this is another way that one can measure offline (i.e. non-digital) marketing efforts (alleviating the old adage, “half of my marketing works, but I don’t know which half”) but also your marketing can get right into the pocket of your potential purchaser and in a very non-intrusive fashion.... Also, there is substantial evidence that if you combine digital and non-digital marketing activity together in one campaign, you would typically see a significantly increased response rate.

Is it expensive? At the moment creating QR codes is still free but like a lot of new technology, it may not stay this way forever!  Of course if you want to print your QR code in anyway that is when you will incur charges.

There are several articles now available to tell you more about QR codes, when I find a nice simple one I tend to tweet them but check out:

http://mashable.com/ or http://econsultancy.com/uk and type in ‘QR Code’ into their search boxes and you’ll see loads of great articles, pick one with a title that works for you.

Marketing a service based business

June 21, 2010

In the course of my consultancy work I come across many businesses which offer a service rather than a product.  Service based businesses need to add a few extra elements to their marketing because there is not a physical product to sell that is exactly the same for whoever buys it, physical products can be seen, touched, smelt etc. and purchasers are able to evaluate the product quality easily - this is not the case with services (they are different for each person that buys them, you can...

Things to consider before embarking on a marketing campaign

June 2, 2010
Following on from my last post, here are some (hopefully thought provoking) things to consider before embarking on a marketing campaign...

Have you got all your ducks in a row? Can you meet any potential demandDo you have processes in place to capture prospect data in order to market to it again in future?  What are your competitors doing at the moment (if you consider a promotional offer, are you simply going to get into a price war?)  What is the current market perception of your products...

What is a Marketing Campaign?

April 28, 2010

What is a marketing campaign?

A marketing campaign is a planned series of activities that take place in order to support the strategic or tactical objectives of a company.  Usually these objectives encompass at least one of the following (see ‘choose your strategy’):
• increasing or creating market awareness of your company/products/services
• lead generation or sales of your products or services
• customer up-sell, cross-sell or retention activity

A campaign usually has a set theme...

November 10, 2009

Very broadly there are three main types of marketing activity:

Awareness

  • General brand awareness (let your potential customers know you exist)
  • Reputation (positively influencing the perception of your brand)
  • Education (people don’t know why they need your product or service)

  • Acquisition
Lead generation (acquiring prospects which you turn into customers)

    Retention
Positively impact customer loyalty (keep your customers for longer)
Up-sell/Cross-sell to existing clients (generate more profit ...

    Marketing 101

    November 1, 2009
What is it all about then?  You think you need it, afterall when you started your business and you wrote your business plan it included a heading called ‘marketing’.  Did you know what to put under that heading, do you really ‘get’ what marketing is all about...?

    Marketing – Art or Science?

    October 18, 2009

Umm, this is an interesting question to pose, and probably not one that can be answered in the relatively short prose of a blog.  However, suffice to say, this is a subject that has got many a true marketeer hot under the collar for some time.  Marketing has always had solid business model style academia behind it but what the rest of the business sees as the ‘output’ from the marketing function has historically been the ‘fluffy’ stuff – things that look nice and shiny.

    It is tru...
